Good pest control equipment decides how evenly, safely and cheaply a job is done. Suppliers sell to operators starting out, established companies, farms with their own pest programmes, factories and homeowners who want a sprayer that outlasts a season. Send one request listing the items and quantities, and equipment suppliers in your area quote the price, stock and delivery. It is free and there is no obligation. This page is about the tools; for chemicals and baits see pest control products.
Sprayers: knapsack, compression and power
A compression sprayer of 5 to 10 litres suits houses, kitchens and cracks, and costs about R350 to R1,500. A knapsack sprayer of 12 to 20 litres is carried on the back for gardens, perimeters and larger buildings, from about R600 for a basic model to R3,500 for one with a better pump and lance. Farms and estates may use motorised or power sprayers, from R6,000. Look for Viton or similar seals if you spray solvent-based products, a good filter at the lance and spares you can still buy next year.
Foggers, traps and stations
A ULV cold fogger produces tiny droplets for flying insects and disinfection; thermal foggers make a dense visible fog in roof voids and large stores. Prices run from about R4,000 to over R25,000, and neither replaces a gas treatment, as explained under fogging and disinfection. Traps and stations are cheaper:
- Tamper-resistant bait stations from about R45 to R180 each, with keys.
- Snap traps and enclosed trap boxes for rats and mice.
- Glue boards for monitoring crawling insects and rodents.
- UV fly light traps from about R1,200 to R4,500, with replacement tubes every year.
- Bird spikes and netting by the metre, see bird control.
Protective gear you should not skimp on
The label sets the personal protective equipment. At minimum that means chemical-resistant gloves, long-sleeved overalls, boots, eye protection and, for fogging or dusts, a respirator with the right filter cartridges. A half-face respirator costs about R450 to R1,800, and the cartridges are a recurring cost with a limited life once opened. Wash overalls separately from the household laundry. Fit matters more than price: a respirator that leaks around a beard or a bad seal protects no one.
Spares, servicing and calibration
A sprayer that drips, pulses or clogs wastes product and applies the wrong dose. Rinse it after each day, keep a kit of spare nozzles, O-rings and a lance filter, and replace worn seals before a season starts. Calibrate by spraying a known area with water and measuring the volume used, so you can mix the correct dilution per square metre. Ask suppliers about warranty, a repair workshop and whether they stock spare parts for the models they sell. Cheap imports often cannot be repaired.
